Selling the Campaign with Canva

For this project, students use Canva (a free graphic design program) to create three images as part of a campaign to raise awareness about an important issue and compose a process essay that outlines and advocates for their chosen cause, identifies the target audience(s), and explains the rhetorical strategies they employ to appeal to the audience(s).  Importantly, the assignment (and the readings associated with it) provide students with a deeper understanding of the important social and ethical issues in their world as well as how and why various discursive sources frame such issues for public consumption. The readings range from new takes on traditional topics (Greenpeace’s use of Lego's to fight drilling in the arctic and the Truth campaign’s new methods of targeting teenagers in a recent ad campain) to social issues that they were previously unaware of (human trafficking in US nail salons and the higher than expected proportion of US seafood obtained through slave labor). In this way, students become more aware and responsible members of their local and global communities and understand the power of an effectively produced text to motivate others to support a worthy cause.
