Brainstorming Ideas

"The use of digital technology to widen the parameters of human interaction and knowledge production is still in its most experimental stage. It's not kids reading about dinosaurs in books, it's passionate paleontologists picking at the dirt in the middle of Wyoming. Where they will or will not find a dinosaur egg or two, where they will or will not discover a new species."

- Sean Michael Morris, "Teaching in Our Right Minds: Critical Digital Pedagogy and the Response to the New"

By this point, you should have viewed all of the other content areas and have a general idea about the capabilities and uses of each program.

Ask yourself the following questions:

- How can you use digital narrative platforms to scaffold student learning? Can a Wix website, a WordPress blog, or a Piktochart infographic make your course content more accessible or engaging for students?

- Is there an opportunity to redesign a traditional project into a digital assignment using some of the narrative platforms explored during the session? Would a paper essay be better as a digital Medium essay or a Google Earth tour? Would a PowerPoint presentation be better as an infographic or website?

- From the other side, could you use Kahoot!, an infographic, or a Google Earth tour to more effectively convey information to your students?

Take a second and find one potential assignment that you could transform or create. Give yourself the time to do this effectively.

- As I mention in the tips on creating assignments, be courageous here. Some of my best digital assignments arose when I transformed projects that worked well as paper projects (see my overview videos for Medium and Wix). The new digital versions have simply further expanded and deepened the effectiveness of the assignments.

Again, spend some time thinking this through before continuing on....

With some luck, you now have a project in mind. Before you do anything else, jot down some of the hopes and concerns you have about assigning this project. If you're playing along at home, view the resources for the program.

Take a few minutes to do this....

If you have someone to share your ideas with, express your concerns about this assignment and talk through what some potential solutions might be. Also, feel free to email me at SOrtolano@fsw.edu to discuss
